ROOKIES FOR RSC AUTOCROSS
Two new Land Rover rookie drivers have entered the seventh round of the National Autocross Championship slated for Athi River’s Portland Cement farm this Sunday. Organized by Rallye Sports Club (RSC), the event will feature five rally cars including Ben Muchemi’s Subaru N10. Eric Bengi (Land Rover Discovery) and Martin Kivuva (Land Rover 109), who made their racing debut in Dol Dol, are testing their cars in Athi in readiness for the season closing JCB/Ganatra Cross Country Rally slated for Masinga Dam on September 3-4. Chief Mechanic Mindo Gatimo is preparing the two Land Rovers as well as managing them. “This is a very enthusiastic team of drivers who have a good potential for the future,” said Gatimo. RSC Chairman Dave Macharia said the track has been designed to suit all cars; “so it promises fantastic fun to see rally car drivers take on their buggies’ counterparts. The track, situated right opposite the Premarosa along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, is a 2.4km open circuit with lots of thrilling bends and straights. Sunday’s Autocross is set to renew rivalries in the main class as well as the under 24 category. Series leader Keith Henrie says nothing short of victory will do for him on Sunday. Keith who leads the Autocross series with 125 points has, however, singled out former Champion Ricky Aslam as his biggest rival. “I’m going for a win. I want to win all the remaining rounds this season. Like I said, competition is healthy and I believe Ricky will come out fighting in Athi River. He (Ricky) upgraded his buggy last time round and drove really fast,” said Keith. Other regulars include Shalien Mughal, Samir Khan, the Under 24 champion and leader Charles Mugo. The under-24 class also lot has the likes of Pavit Kenth, Rai siblings- Rajbir and Amaanraj-who are sons of two-time Kenya champion Sarbi Rai. AUTOCROSS STANDINGS AS AT RD 6 1. Keith Henrie 125 2.
