Barely a fortnight after being feted the KNRC Division 3 drivers’ Champion at the 2009 Annual Motor Sports Awards in Nairobi; Said is insatiably targeting new limits after upgrading to the high-tech Subaru Impreza N10. “I just can’t wait to feel the intensity of the new car,” commented navigator Okundi, who finished second overall in the KNRC Division 3 navigators’ crown behind Ravi Soni. “The changes in the size of restrictor will surely perk up speeds, but our main headache as of now is to tune the car to high altitude settings as we head to Iten,” said Said. The team will be managed by Mohammed Ali Khan amiably known to the facebook rally family as Simba Dume. Meanwhile, Yamakasi are targeting a major sponsor to take them through to the 2010 season. Yamakasi Rally Team started the season, honestly, not expecting much, as Khan would put it. “Allah (God) was the only hope we had since for our team driver (Said) to win the division 3 Class coming off a long layoff, was a stunning plus,” said Khan. The new Subaru N10, which replaces the archaic version six Subaru, has been acquired from Prodrive Masters. “The car is just fantastic. Many details could be immaterial at this point in time, but the machine is known around and will give us the requisite power and performance,” continued Khan. Yamakasi has since disposed of the gutless but Championship winning Version 6 ‘Magic gc8 Impreza to their Pandya Corner Garage comrades- Para and Minesh- who will be teaming up with Yamakasi Rally Team this season. Said was enthusiastic as preparations gathered momentum at the Yamakasi workshop in Tudor Mombasa. “I am still trying to get the hang of the N10 but being new doesn’t mean being poor. I have always been a disciplined driver and expect the best out of it,” said Said. Said tested the N10 in Nguu Tatu recently and felt comfortable with it. “It gave a good turn of speed. The handling felt much all right. We have the necessary spare parts that will surely push us on and we should ship in more in due course,” added Said. But the soft-spoken driver is nevertheless not sure of the teething problems he is to expect in the new season. “We always plan and keep track of all aspects in preparations. I know teething problems will be diverse and tormenting but we will develop the car and eventually get used to the systems,” explained Said. Said says he can’t really predict where Yamakasi will stand this season “but all I can say is to pray to Allah to put us on top of things.” “Our popular buzzwords are to better have the car wait for us than us wait for it,” said Said. |
