In what has been a first in the partnership with Kenya Motor Sports Foundation (KMSF), Car Track came on board last year to provide the tracking system of rally cars from the rally HQs through fitting of transponders in the first 10 rally cars. The transponders are fitted with GPRS cellular network simcards hence facilitating communication with the satellite up there. “Last year we had a number of teething problems like the network issue on the remote locations as well as trying to enlighten the rally fraternity on how the system works. We go to the ground before hand to physically to keep tabs with situations on the rally location before setting up our systems for operation,” said Kahonge. Car Track’s short term obligation is to remain a key player in vehicle tracking market that has been rocked by the infamous ‘Track It’ scandal highlighted in a section of electronic by an undercover team. “For one, we strive to restore the confidence of the public that this system really works and can monitor cars from whatever location. And we are achieving this initiative through the fancied rally sport. Our long term obligation is to work hand in hand with KMSF and ensure that we bring back the WRC through embracing technology and to jettison all archaic methods of organization,” explained Kahonge. Kahonge notes that the system is very common in the WRC where transponders are installed in all the rally cars and even used in recording stage times. “Our partnership with KMSF will come in handy and with government support forthcoming, we will convince FIA that Kenyan organizers are technology-compliant.” This season, Car Track has set a benchmark to run transponders in all rally cars. “We started off with 10 cars and this season we will be having more transponders permanently installed in rally cars,” Kahonmge said. “The Car Track system is indeed intricate as it provides location in terms of where the rally vehicle is, the speed that the rally car is doing as well as timing system between checkpoints. One of the most interesting aspects is the panic button we have also installed for safety reason and which crews are required to press while in distress; for the onward dispatch of the emergency team to the scene of the incident. This is a big plus because such initiatives were being monitored form the Mid-Point monitors.” Car Track is in the meantime engaging in a full-blown campaign to educate rally officials on intricacies of the system. “We shall also educate drivers on a number of issues and sensitize them of the safety unit in the car, which I believe is to their advantage,” said Kahonge. |
