Apollo, Mugo win at Jamhuri

motorcross action

AFTER months of trying, outgoing MX65 Champion Apollo Mbuki and MX1 prospect Charles Mugo claimed their maiden wins as the fifth round of the Kenya Motocross Championship came to a dramatic end at Jamhuri Park on Sunday.

Apollo, who is making his debut at MX85 this season, had his campaign effectively sewn up when East Africa Champion Ivan Guya ran into mechanical gremlins midway through the third and last heat. David Murigi showed no signs of rust at his MX50 (of bikes up to 50cc) class specialty. He beat Rolf Kihara and Ryan Bailey to the MX50 honors.

GUYA, CRUZE AND MURIGI SHINE

The rigors of the newly built Athi River racetrack were mesmerizing to spectators and competitors alike.

With no major upsets recorded at the fourth round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship on Sunday, most leaders were made to fight every inch of the way.

Shivam Vinayak (MX1) and Samir Anwar (MX65) remained the only riders in the eight- leg circuit with a flawless cumulative score after romping home with a maximum 60points.

With an apparently insatiable hunger for success, Shivam was all smiles after victory.

“I felt quite rusty going into the early morning 15 minutes practice session but got back into rhythm when the official heats followed,” explained Shivam.

Guya, Apollo Renew Rivalry in Athi River

For quite some time, outgoing MX65 Champion Apollo Mbuku has been fighting to eclipse whiz kid Ivan Guya at his MX85 game.

Their rivalry should truly be the highlight of the fourth round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship organized by East African Motor Sports Club (EAMSC) in Athi River this Sunday (May 23).

With the ongoing torrential rains, Athi River will be an entirely new experience away from the now waterlogged Jamhuri Park racetrack.

Apollo, the outgoing MX65 Champion is apparently having sleepless nights following two defeats to Guya; who is now perceived the new kid on the block at MX85.

Guya was categorical that it’s just a matter of time before he outmaneuvers Mbuki in his planned hat-trick of wins.

“I hold Mbuki in high esteem, but let him be aware that a star in the MX85 is in the making,” quipped Guya.

IVAN GUYA SPARKLES AT JAMHURI PARK

Despite pre-season scares from newly promoted Apollo Mbuki, wonder boy Ivan Guya lived up to expectation in the season opening Kenya National Motocross Championships at Jamhuri Park race track.

Guya opened an early lead in the MX85 class as bikes showdown got off to a thunderous start.

"The bike's handling felt so good in the entire three heats and this is a perfect way of starting a season," said Guya.

Apollo Mbuki also won accolades in the MX85 riding his KTM 85 machine to second overall at first attempt.

"I guess this is a perfect start. I am still coming to grips with the bike," Mbuki commented.

Cruze Muigai, at MX 2, remained trim and formidable. Muigai beat his cousin Tutu Maina to second overall but complained of the pain inflamed by some old hand injury.

MOTO – X GOES TO KITALE IN 2010

One of the most interesting features in the 2009 Kenya National Motocross Championship series is the hosting of two rounds outside Nairobi.

Besides the third round designated at the sandy Diani racetrack in South Coast on April 11, plans are also afoot to build up a new track at a serene Kitale farm that will host one of the eight rounds.

The opening round takes place at Jamhuri Park on February 21 organized by East African Motor Sports Club (EAMSC).

Dr Sunil Vinayak of EAMSC said funds accrued from the anticipated new sponsor from a Kitale-based seed firm will be used in building the track as well as catering for transportation of bikes to the venue.

The East African AMU Challenge will be a series of three rounds with the likelihood of Uganda hosting two. Dr Vinayak said there are plans to relocate the regional AMU to Kitale due to the geographical proximity from Uganda though the decision is subject to confirmation by tactical experts who will send to inspect the venue.
