![]() Guya, Apollo Renew Rivalry in Athi River
For quite some time, outgoing MX65 Champion Apollo Mbuku has been fighting to eclipse whiz kid Ivan Guya at his MX85 game. Their rivalry should truly be the highlight of the fourth round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship organized by East African Motor Sports Club (EAMSC) in Athi River this Sunday (May 23). With the ongoing torrential rains, Athi River will be an entirely new experience away from the now waterlogged Jamhuri Park racetrack. Apollo, the outgoing MX65 Champion is apparently having sleepless nights following two defeats to Guya; who is now perceived the new kid on the block at MX85. Guya was categorical that it’s just a matter of time before he outmaneuvers Mbuki in his planned hat-trick of wins. “I hold Mbuki in high esteem, but let him be aware that a star in the MX85 is in the making,” quipped Guya.
In response, Mbuki said he has something up his sleeves to cut down Guya to size this time round. “Well, let’s wait and see who loses out,” said Mbuki, who has now come to grips with his new KTM85 bike. Just whose sentiments would be a prank, remains to be seen. Teenage motocross sensation Cruze ‘Control’ Muigai is among those expected to mesmerize crowds at the MX2 Category. Muigai, no doubt a gem in the sport, has vowed to raffle feathers despite the two months lull which all riders have had to contend with when the third round was postponed from April 11 to September 12. Despite the long layoff, the indefatigable Cruze is determined to demonstrate just what stuff he’s made off. In the past two seasons, there has been a protracted rivalry between Muigai and his cousin Tutu Maina at MX2 class which incidentally left motorbike enthusiast spell bound. Cruze is at it this season not only with his flawless score of 120points score; but also exhibiting his natural track stunts. Also not to be left out at MX2 is all-rounder Ken Anunda, son of former rally ace Dave Anunda, who is making leaps and bounds with his KTM motorbike. The stakes are high, so to speak, as all leaders gun for three straight wins in the eight leg series. Feisty Shivam Vinayak is among those itching to ride after having completed essential performance tests to his powerful Yamaha 450 four-stroke bike. Like Cruze, Shivam will be going for his third win at MX1 and so is Samir Anwar (MX65), David Murigi (MX50) and East African AMU champion Ivan Guya (MX85). “I just can’t wait to demonstrate what the machine can do. But I know for sure I will have to ride fast to cope with the rigors of the race,” said Shivam. s Meanwhile, EAMSC has newly elected officials. THE EAMSC TEAM Chairman- Rick Ashley Vice Chairman-Eng.
