REIGNING Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) champion Baldev ‘Boldy’ Chager reckons he has what it takes to shake-off the rust at the KCB Safari Rally 2009 set for April 3-5.

To set the ball rolling, Chager has in the meantime imported new spare parts in order to make his act quicker and reliable.

Chager says he is compelled to make upgrades “because other teams have invested on new parts.”

“I am anxious as I await my debut with Oilibya Rally Team and only time will tell. But it will be very difficult because I missed out on the opening round (KCB Biashara Banking Rally) and got quite a lot of catching up to do. I don’t anticipate any retirements though,” Chager, who has not rallied for six months, said. Chager, will now team up with Anwar siblings-Asad and Azar.

The ‘Flying Sikh’ was enthusiastic as he prepared to brand his Subaru Impreza N12 in the Oliibya livery. His car will also spot the Galitos logo.

Chager has had to cool his heels when Triton Sports withdrew its sponsorship for him and Lee Rose. Chager says there will be nothing like team orders at the Oilibya Team “and it’s everyone for himself and God for us all.” Even as he ponders to recover points, Chager is looking forward to a splendid season. “I need to go fast and get top position so that I can make-up for my absence in Iten.

(Carl) Tundo has a maximum 80 points and its will really be a tussle,” said Chager. The 2007 motor sports personality of the year reckons he has fully come to terms with the Subaru N12 now in its third straight year. “We will still hire experts to fine-tune the setting future. My top priority will be to put the Motec (Electronic Control Unit) in the best possible shape. I am still consulting with experts to do so,” he said.

Chager says Mitsubishi have a sharper edge on paper and have proven to be faster and reliable on Kenyan soil. On the contrary, he observes, “Mitsubishis have struggled against Subarus at the WRC yet here in Kenya the former has had an edge. Subarus seem to be faster in the rough and it will all depend on the terrain.”
